Chief Residents 2006-2007

Dra. Idaliz Canales and Dra. Madeline Aponte

Our role as the Chief Residents is to serve as the intermediary between our residents and the programs directors. We produce the monthly resident work schedules and, along with Dr. Onier Villarreal, Academic Chief, head-up the academic curriculum and ensure that it is highly educational and fun for all trainees.

Our program is a three year emergency medicine training program composed of up to ten residents per year, based at the Puerto Rico University Hospital at Carolina. About 56,000 Emergency patients are seen yearly at UPR Hospital.

The department Faculty is composed of attending physician’s of diverse clinical backgrounds and experience that work hand by hand with all residents.

The emergency medicine curriculum is designed to ensure residents proficiency in the following areas: triage, evaluation, recognition, resuscitation and stabilization of acutely ill or injured patients; skillful performance of all emergency procedures; the ability to evaluate and prioritize urgent care needs; and high quality treatment and follow-up care. Residents also learn sonography skills and technique from the fellowship trained Emergency Ultrasound specialist.

Every week five hours are devoted to structured educational lectures, including small group conferences, Morbidity and Mortality Conferences. Journal Club’s are held once a month. Two Cadaver Labs a year are organized to facilitate procedural skill development.

Our program teaches the importance to balance the professional live with family life and community involvement. This is the base to reach a satisfying, life-long career in emergency medicine.

We hope this coming year will be exciting for all of our residents as well as all other residents and students who will rotate through our department. We are always available if you have any questions or concerns as we progress through the academic year.
