Rotations:

Fourth year medical students will be doing 12 hour shifts from 8am-8pm or 8pm-8am.  Prompt arrival is mandatory.  If there is a problem then students should call the attending on duty in the ED (787-701-1680) to inform of their situation.  They will follow a schedule similar to that of first year EM residents.  The schedules will be given by the chief residents of the Department of Emergency Medicine.  Any changes to be made with the schedule must be first approved by the chief residents.   Students must report to the senior resident or attending in charge at the respective time before starting a shift.  Medical students will be assigned to the different areas in emergency medicine that includes:

Ambulatory Care/Urgent Care (12-14 days)

Critical Care (1 day)

Pediatric Care (2-3 days)

Trauma/Acute Care (2-3 days)

Although the bulk of the rotation will be in Ambulatory/Urgent Care, medical students will be allowed to rotate at least one day in Pediatric Care, Trauma Care, Critical Care, and Acute Care.  During that time, medical students must present all their cases to the senior resident and to the attending.  Senior and junior resident will be assigning cases to each medical student in the respective area.  If there are no cases to be seen in the respective area, then the students will be redirected to Urgent Care until a patient becomes available.

Students are required to wear lab coats when working in the ED or navy blue scrubs.  If wearing scrubs of different color, one must wear lab coats.

Literature:

Our department has a library set up that is open for all residents and students rotating in emergency medicine.  In the library there is an extensive up to date references in emergency medicine as well as in other areas of medicine.  We also have three computers with high speed internet that is connected to the University of Puerto Rico Medical School Library.  We urge medical students to take advantage of our library and read any material pertinent to the cases they see in the ED.

Weekly Didactic Activities:

Every Wednesday, all EM residents and rotators will meet in the conference room on the 1st floor of the University Hospital-Carolina from 8am till 2pm.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided.  Assistance to these didactic activities is mandatory unless you are post-call.  The didactic activities compose a series of lectures, discussion, chapter reviews, and guest speakers.   In addition, medical students will meet once a week for an hour with an attending to discuss a chapter/topic out of the Carol River’s Emergency Medicine Review Textbook or the Tintanelli’s Emergency Medicine textbook.    The topics will be handed out during the first few days of the rotation.  During the didactic activities, lab coats must be worn at all times.

Presentation:

Medical students will be required to do a 15 minute presentation on a case they saw in the ED.  Case presentation will include discussion of the differential diagnosis of the case in an ED setting.  Presentations will be done during the resident didactic activity.  All presentation must be made in Power Point format and students must inform the Chief of Didactic Activity about their presentation.   Students can use the library to help prepare their presentation.  Please feel free to consult any senior/attending before presenting the case.

Journal Clubs:

Every third week of the month, residents will meet to discuss articles from some emergency medicine journal.  Although attendance is not mandatory we strongly urge medical students to go to these activities.
