OUR EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
Our hospital is a University-Community based, trauma level II Institution, that serves 250,000 populations in the northeastern coast of our Island and chaired by Dr. Juan A. González-Sánchez. The recently approved status of Department of Emergency Medicine was granted in both as an academic department and as a fully recognized department service at the UPR Hospital and the School of Medicine. Our Emergency Department with 54,000 visits/years is staffed with Emergency Medicine attending physicians 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. They, with the help of a team of residents and a specialized emergency nursing staff, have the responsibility for initial triage, evaluation, management and disposition of all the patients presented to our institution. It consists of the Ambulatory Care area, the Urgent Care (pediatric and adult) area, two Trauma rooms and Critical Care room.
Administrative Personnel
Ambulatory care - 8 fully equipped patient encounter/evaluation units
· Ophthalmology room (slit lamp) · OB-Gyn room
Urgent Care - the largest area of the Emergency Department Pediatrics - 8 beds designated for the pediatric patient o Fully equipped evaluation unit o Fully equipped Pediatric Critical Care room
Adult Area o Full Cardio-respiratory monitoring for 12 patients o 15 observation area beds o 2 isolation beds o Asthma Room – 6 comfortable recliners where patients can receive respiratory therapy
Trauma Room - Two separated suites with capacity for two patients each · Full Cardio-respiratory monitoring · Also used for minor surgical and orthopedic procedures
Critical Care Room - Our Emergency Department 3 bed Intensive and Coronary Care Unit
· Unit is fully equipped with Cardio/respiratory monitoring and pacemaker capacity OTHER AREAS: The resident and attending's room are both equipped with pantry area, bathrooms, lockers, etc
